The origin of "ShatterScript"

Backstory

The beginning of 2020 I was just about to graduate University with my Bachelors in Computing and Business. I had been working the hardest I had in my life to graduate 1 year early with extra money in my savings. I was planning to quit my marketing job and spend the spring/summer in Europe before coming back to Canada to settle down in a tech related position somewhere.

As all of you remember, early 2020 was also the beginning of the pandemic. My semester and marketing position were moved online and the world was shut down indefinitely. I didn't leave the house much that year but had a lot of fun meeting people online through discord and working on a couple light music projects to learn Cakewalk as a hobby. In September 2021 I was fired from my marketing job. I was collecting unemployment, and then in 2022 I found another job that I quit a few months later.

The Beginning

Most of my time spent over these 3 years was in front of a screen and it gave me a ton of time to think and reflect on life. It started to sink in that my time is finite and that I should spend it doing something I love. I started to brainstorm all the things I could do for the rest of my life that would make me happy doing. I could get back in the tech industry, I could find a marketing job, I could become a skydiving instructor, I could become a game programmer, I could even become a musician, and a bunch of other things. As much as I would enjoy all of these things, I realized none of these things were my calling. There was not a single thing I could see fulfilling my purpose. I asked myself a different question…

“One day you will be old, you'll look at your dreams and aspirations and realize that your physical limitations have caught up to you. What will you regret not doing when that time comes?”

My answer was this project.

Closing

ShatterScript is the promise to my future self that I would try to turn my passion for music into some sort of career. In an ideal world this project would succeed, but the reality is that I'm satisfied knowing I gave it everything I could.
